Welcome to Woodsfield, the seat of Monroe County, flourished during the turn of the century oil and gas boom. We are served by State Highways 26,SR 800 and 78, about 45 miles southwest of Wheeling, WV, within a few hours' drive of Columbus, Akron, Cleveland, Dayton, Cincinnati, Louisville and Pittsburgh.
Monroe County was named the "Switzerland of Ohio" for the beautiful rugged hills that reminded early German and Swiss settlers of their European homeland. It was established in 1813, and named for James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States.
Coal was found in Monroe County and is an important economic resource, but is found too far underground to economically surface mine. Primary metal is the second major industry in Monroe County. Woodsfield was named after Archibald Woods who helped plat the town in 1812.
Held the 4th week in August, the county fair features 5 days of exhibits, midway rides and games, tractor and truck pulls, demolation derby, monster trucks, Kart racing, and harness racing, 4H livestock shows all week with Thursday holding the livestock sales.

The Wayne National Forest covers 25,000+ acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and provides camping, hiking on developed trails plus hunting, fishing and endless recreational possibilities. Kiedaish Point Park features an overlook of the Ohio River. The point was developed in 1974 as a picnic/overlook area with a commanding view of New Martinsville, WV. Hiking trails afford our visitors a unique glimpse of the rugged terrain that exists in the River Valley.
