While reading the INNformer, I read an article about the proposed name change to the Wayne National Forest written by Charles Winslow. "The USDA Forest Service is proposing to change the name of Wayne National Forest to Buckeye National Forest." It states that the request comes from American Indian Tribes and local community members.
The forest "was established in 1934 when Congress passed legislation authorizing the establishment of five purchase units for the Wayne, which is named in honor of Revolutionary War general "Mad Anthony" Wayne, who following the war served in Congress before being recalled to the military by President George Washington to command U.S. forces in the Northwest Indian War, where he defeated the British-backed Northwestern Confederacy, an alliance of several Native American tribes." according to Winslow's article.
The only forest in Ohio. We have about 25,000 acres of WNF in our county of Monroe.
